NEW BEGINNING - Luna Rekipse

Luna Reklipse is a rock, blues band that really surprised me, well to be honest not just me but many others in music who knows the frontman Dave Bremner.
I first heard of Dave when I was working for OK! Records and was presented with this epic traditional Scottish track 'Highland Home'.
See many in music got used to this soft voice filled with passion for his country and never even guessed burning within was this heavy sound of rock and blues waiting to burst out like something from an 'Alien' movie.
I was first sent just 3 tracks of this album when they were rough demos last year and could not believe what I was hearing. Dave Bremner.... THIS is Dave Bremner??? I asked myself, then where has he been hiding this?, where did this come from?
I sent the tracks to another artist who has been in the business almost all his life and he knew of Dave, wants to work with him and his reply to these demos were "WOW".
It isn't often artists get great praise from other fellow artists but the tracks on this debut album has really caused a stir.
What I love is this isn't just an album where Dave has written and composed the tracks, turned up and told the band what he wants. No this is an album where all the band have had a major input to the finished sound and quality.
OK yes it has a lot of Dave's rock influences but it has the bands too.
I mentioned the word BAND a few times, about time I told you who they are before I get into reviewing the tracks & telling you the backstories.

Luna Reklipse is -

Dave Bremner lead vocals, acoustic guitar, electric rhythm guitar, percussion

John Thomson (JT) bass guitar and backing vocals

Ryan Mathieson drums
Since the making of this album Ryan has left the Luna Reklipse to return to his previous band Priority Drive, and everyone wishes him well
The new drummer for all future recordings and live gigs is Steve Boylan

Graeme King drums (Hey Jo)

Niall Mattheson lead guitar
(Niall has been the lead guitar player for Prog-rock band Pallas for more years than he would want to admit – but all parties are proud he took time to rock with LR)

Track One - Ex Girlfriends Ex Bestfriend

This was one of the first tracks I heard as a demo, now fully mastered it kicks off with the alternative rock power that leaves your ears buzzing for more. To me it gives you the feel of Oasis in sound with added screaming guitars that are so awesome you just want to get up and ROCK (air guitar). It has some lovely stripped down guitar sound bites midway also that lead into the final guitar solo.
I was stunned by Dave letting rip with some rock vocals & that scream. It has a true backstory to it too which may explain why it works so well as the best songs come from past memories & them told within a song. Dave says

"It was a real life situation from my teens – oh so many years ago. Going into a birthday party with the current girlfriend of the time – met her best friend – who became - my new girlfriend. Not something that happened all to often for anyone or to me – just got the idea driving past the house where L used to stay. It’s the opening track of our live set more times than not.

Wanted to have the new time pop rocker type of feel to the song – think we got there."

Track Two - Halfpenny Cornerstreetman Moneymaker

An amazing bass intro by JT with guitars having an early ZZ Top feel, this has a real rockin' boogie beat to get up and dance. In fact I defy anyone to try not to tap your foot through it as you just can't help yourself. Even the do, do, do, chants gets you singing. Everything about this song is so right the drums thrash all the way for the lovers who want to headbang. It is also based on Dave's past and the lyrics sort of tell you that once you've been told. Dave says

"This is a song about the times I played on the streets in Glasgow, an experience. Bass player came up with the idea of “pinching” and adapting the blues brothers riff for the start of the song so we could have a bit more of a laid back build up to this boogie rocker. A real floor filler."

Track Three - Sinner Or A Saint

Just love the start of this as you hear the rain and the guitars give you the feel of 'Pulp fiction' with touch of 70s rock with a fantastic bluesy chug. This was the 2nd demo I received and hearing it now makes me smile as its moved on so much with heavy licks, deep bass and Dave's vocals go up to another level.
the backstory was interesting to read as in life many artists hear one word or see one picture or a sentence by someone and a whole song is born, and this was exactly how this was written and composed. Hear it what Dave says

"While watching an episode of NCIS there was a comment by one of the stars about their latest case – was she a sinner or a saint – from there I wrote the basic version of this great song in about 15 minutes. I asked our bass player to start with a great riff as I was having real timing issues on the guitar riff – sorted."

Track Four - I Have You

Starting off with a beautiful acoustic guitar with the track building up to an epic rock ballad, this is a kind of song you can imagine all the lovers smooching too and the rockers waving the lighters in the air. How can I describe it best? Well it simply gives me goosebumps as its pure magic a must to listen to, a must to have in your collection. The backstory is all based on Dave's life now and what demons he faces and the support from the love of his life, hear is what Dave says

"Originally recorded and released as a solo Dave Bremner track – following on the blues theme. During a gig I decided to play a few acoustic solo numbers which included this song. The next practise session our drummer asked if we could try this song and it fell into place almost immediately. Originally I had sung two bars of oos but asked JT if he could replace these with a bass lead line – the resulting effect was stunning – after a few changes the bass line from my original oos is used through out the song.
The song is about my fight with depression and my trying to appreciate what I had – especially the love a concern of my beautiful wife"

Track Five - Lay Your Head On My Pillow

Now I know what your thinking, you read the title and think a slow, romantic number WRONG!!!
This has a fast beat, screaming lead wonderful harmonies. It reminds me of classic U2 in sound and just love it, works wonderful blaring out in car stereo.
When I heard that the song is based on Dave's relationship with his wife I thought why so fast? Why not a slow smooch? Dave explains his reasons

"another song about the relationship I have with Julie – my soul mate of 20 years+. I wanted this to have a feel of a title song from an American sit-come such as friends and the like. One of the best rock poems I have written and worked closely with Niall to get the right sound and feel to the guitar – he’s an artist, jealous of his ability but pleased he agreed to guest with us. A song for the American rock market"

Track Six - Looking For Love

Full of blues guitars with awesome riffs with some raw vocals from Dave with a chorus you feel forced to join in with. Who it reminded me of was in fact the very artist Dave was influenced by for this track. and this what Dave said
"Another re write / re record of a Dave Bremner solo track, driving Chris Rea type track and a crowd pleaser normally when playing live.
Was written at a time I was kinda low and felt I have lost the ability to love or be loved – out of the deep hole came this cracking rocker."

Track Seven - Dreams (I Wanna Play Rock n Roll)

This is a song with true feeling mainly because it comes from the heart as Dave really wants to perform, be heard, be seen and going by what I heard he should be. When you play this you get a Meatloaf feel as the epic story, the raw vocals coming from the very soul. I WANNA PLAY ROCK N ROLL it even has that epic screaming guitar that almost have a dark side just love it.
Dave says
"An auto biographical story of my desire to play my music to the masses. Was written years ago when I felt shafted by a major Record Company but had no proof. Updated this about 2 years ago. Listen to the words – it tells the story."

Track Eight - Mystic Woman

Now Dave and myself met through the love of Marc Bolan's music, poetry and his use of words that often took you places or talked of people you felt you knew. 'Mystic Woman' is a tip of the hat to Marc from Dave who's dream is to one day record a tribute album to the main man of T.Rex. This track has a '20th Century Boy' style of riff. It is raw with the most heaviest rocking backing Dave in conversation on Skype said he even adds influences of Deep Purple and Bon Jovi and now I know I can hear that too. If you love rock LOVE the AXE you be totally blown away by this track that so stands out on this album.
Dave says
"This song was written in the style of the 70s rock bands I used to (and still listen to) and although I don’t have a traditional rock god voice – we just had to record it and love the outcome. Based on my love of the mystic and heavily influenced by my love of Marc Bolan writings.  As heavy as we get but others of the same ilk on the way to compete against this."

Track Nine - Hey Jo

This song I will always feel part of as I was online and witnessed the full events. I remember Dave being in his car on his way home knowing this was taking place and wanting to get indoors, online & to help his friend. By the time he got home the song was written mentally in his head. The song proves Facebook can have a positive effect and when things are down you find your real friends. The guitars on this track are outstanding and I must point out when performed live Luna Reklipse do it a little different as JT steps up and adds a little 'Let it be' by The Beatles which works so well and does down with everyone. This is the last song of a totally awesome album which I highly recommend to buy once it goes on sale. I leave you with the words of Dave on this song & the album itself
"A song written about a Marc Bolan fan by a Marc Bolan fan who was one of a team who helped some one who put out on face book that she was struggling and needed help. The love of Bolan on facebook  helped a friend back on the path to recovery from dark days."

"OVERALL AS THE SONG WRITER I REALISE I AM BLESSED TO HAVE AND NEED TO HAVE SO MANY TALENTED MUSICIANS AROUND ME - AS LUNA REKLIPSE WE HAVE A GREAT SOUND BASED ON THE LOVE OF PLAYING ORIGINAL MATERIAL FROM MY SONG BOOK OF SO MANY – SO STEP ONE ON THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN AS WE WERE BORN TO BOOGIE IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF ROCK N ROLL  IN SO MANY DIFFERENT COLOURS.

FIREFLY - Jo Mummery

Now available on iTunes is two stunning tracks by Jo Mummery, first is 'FIREFLY' which is a song Jo says she got influenced by watching a Marc Bolan video on You Tube. The video had effects to make it look old and it came to her that it looked like fireflies dancing in Marc's hair.

The second song is a rocking track entitled 'Fire Within' which I loved the very first time I heard it. The track gives you reminders of T.Rex with the use of bongos and drums.
Infact Jo has had comments about other tracks recoreded by her by the man who produced much of T.Rex classic albums Tony Visconti, where he says.... QUOTE "Jo's songs 'Shining Star' and 'Blue Wizard' are gentle, innocent and heart felt". These two new songs are no exception, taken from her debut album 'Electric Angel'to be released in near future.

*Note 'Shining Star' is also on sale on iTunes

Lost Balloons by Baby Scream THE REVIEW

I have now lost count at how many reviews I have written on Baby Scream but each time it is always a pleasure.

Today's release is a FREE download on Eternal Sunday records entitled 'Lost Balloons'.

It reminds me of a bag of sweets children use to buy in UK from 1950s up to late
1960s called 'Jamboree Bag' as you buy it but not know what mix you get inside til you opened it or in this case press PLAY.

This album has such a wild mixed range Barry Parsons (CRMK Radio) told me "isn't it so awesome?"

The album kicks off with a short, quiet and relaxing acoustic 'We Are Against The System (One More Chance) which is a demo and sort of threw me really as with a title like that I expected a completely different sound.

As for track two 'Ball Of Fun' well you could be listening to any big name rock band as so heavy, in fact the most nearest to heavy metal I've heard Baby Scream. Talk about clearing the wax from your ears after track one
*NOTE - best played volume fully cranked

As the album moves on with 'I've Had Enough With You' we find we move more into a punk sound the sound sort of suits Juan Pablo Mazzola's vocals with really rough & agressive growl which is a far cry from his past Lennon influenced tones so many mention (including me).

This album has rock, punk, demo's and acoustic's but also it has a large number of cover versions.
The first cover on 'Lost Balloons' is a track first recorded by The Electric Prunes entitled 'Onie'. This is a wonderful acoustic & Juan's vocals are so soft & layered well to give a great pure sound with amazing backing by the band including a lovely piano solo.

'Revenge Of The Nerds' is a track you hear & swear you've heard before amazing guitar work & the drum beat gives an epic movie soundtrack feel to the song. Juan's vocals are rather haunting almost ghostly.

Don't be fooled by the start of the demo 'I Don't Wanna Wake Up From This Dream' as this rocks too or should I say R O C K S
I have played this track more than any other on the album.

'Barry's Blues' (The Groove Lounge) was recorded mainly as a radio jingle for Barry Parsons Wednesday's show on CRMK Radio. A Marc Bolan themed show Juan has appeared on a few times and I may add where I first met Juan. This track uses a Bolan style rift to give you the feel of what Barry's show gives you every week.

Now this track really confused me as it was the very first track I heard off 'Lost Balloons' sent by Juan. He said this is what my new album will be like, I played Tony Orlando's cover 'Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Old Oak Tree' and think huh!!!
My confusion soon passed when the cover was better than I expected as I had many doubts as the original was so cheasey & I was told by Juan that "trust me you love the album" he wasn't wrong.

'Sadly Beautiful' is a home acoustic cover of The Replacements which is so clear & again relaxes you to sink into a comfortable sofa & start to drift off to a world till BANG!!!! this loud rocking, punky fast, loud beat of 'When The Angel's Sing' a cover of Social Distortion shakes you to the foundations.

Don't think you can sit back down to relax again after that thou as what you think happens if I say it is followed by a two in a row of the Ramones covers 'Judy Is A Punk Rocker' and Beat The Brat' ?

CORRECT it sooooo rocks soooooooo punks up and I assure you there is full & total respect to the legends that were The Ramones so awesome.

The next two tracks are very personal to me as I first met Juan due to the original demo's on an acetate of Marc Bolan of these songs 'Song For A Soldier' and
'Reality'. The tracks were never released by Marc in his life time & sadly still have not been today as they are owned by a private collector. However Juan's take on these demo's are so fantastic there was much talk and interest & wait for them to become available. High Wire is another Marc Bolan cover (T.Rex) it is a wonderful acoustic ballad and I just love the vocals as Juan always shows his passion to Marc's work. Hard to believe this is only a demo.

The last two tracks of the album I was personally involved in as at the time I was working with DeafboyOne on a project entitled 'DUETS'. Pete Waller (DeafboyOne) who was (at time of recording) living in Sydney, Australia & I was finding artists around the globe to sing with him through the magic of Internet and Pete's master on the mixer friend/producer Rod Willner.

'Cosmic Dancer' was the 2nd take as Pete had recorded this on his own but Juan had requested to duet him on this track also. The sound of it being live was just so clever as really they were thousands of miles apart. I love too how adding bongoes gave it the old sound of Tyrannosaurus Rex which Marc's original of this classic he had moved away from.

As for 'Working Class Hero' it just had to be done as Juan is such a big fan of Lennon's & his vocals are always compared to his.
The duets introduced themselves to each other and are now good friends wanting at some point to meet up for real & record again.

That will be worth waiting for...

So that's my thoughts on this free download if you have not got all ready the link is below to go and do so - enjoy

20th Century Boy Musicial

Thu 8 September to Sat 1 October

20th CENTURY BOY

Written by / Peter Rowe in association with Gary Lloyd, based on an original idea by Brian Dunham, Colin Giffin and Nicky Graham
Music and lyrics / Marc Bolan
Director / Gary Lloyd

The world premiere of this new musical explodes onto the New Wolsey stage this autumn. Featuring some of the greatest rock songs ever written 20th Century Boy is a celebration of the life of Marc Bolan and his band T.Rex.

Rocker, poet, electric warrior, king of glam, godfather of punk – Marc Bolan tried many styles on for size in his search to become a superstar. Before his tragic death in 1977, a few days short of his 30th birthday, Bolan lived life at breakneck speed, creating a series of iconic images, a string of number one hits and an army of obsessive fans. This dynamic new musical looks behind the glitter and the sequins to discover what drove the “bard of Hackney” to become “bigger than the Beatles”.

Packed with 70’s hits including Ride a White Swan, Metal Guru, Get It On, I Love to Boogie, Children of the Revolution, and of course, the title track 20th Century Boy!

Promised World by Joël Bolan review & mini bio by Ace MegaRex

I first got to know Joël Bolan through a buy on ebay funny enough at the time thou he was going under the name of Joel Ramone and had released a wonderful full orchestral version of Marc’ Bolan’s ‘Children of Rarn Suite’ including Marc’s original vocals from 1970.
This was an outstanding peace of work that I found that I often play over the years to come. I then started to look out for that name and later found Joël himself singing Marc Bolan’s classic ‘Left Hand Luke’ that same day while on myspace I came across a Joël Bolan http://www.myspace.com/bolanjoel and was surprised to find him to be the very same guy & we’ve been friends ever since.

Before I give the review of his new track ‘Promised World which is based on Marc Bolan and Joël’s late father Jean-Paul I am going to tell you a brief bio of Joël Bolan so you get to know him and understand the reason for this release and it’s lyrics.

Over the years many people thought Joël changed his name to Bolan due to the T.Rex link but the truth is, which is very interesting that Bolan is his family name and the Bolan’s came to France in 1700s and a distance relation around 1856 was called Marc Bolan. Strange to think many years later Joël would get to show a love for the rock star’s music with the same family members name maybe due to that family connection (*in name only).

Born in the 60s with a family background full of artistic affections with father and uncle and even his grandparents all musicians, Joël in his early years already started showing his abilities in painting, drawing and poetry.
It was not till he was 13 that he would buy his very first album ‘The Best of T.Rex’.
Hearing this had a massive effect on the rest of his life as music started to be and has been since his main interest in life.

Joël however was not content on just listening to T.Rex he wanted to learn to play their music. He brought his first acoustic guitar & soon learnt how to play all his favorites. Once he had done this he was still not content so started to compose his own.
Thing was in the 80s Joël was not happy with what sounds were going around so he started to study classic rock guitarists which was not only Marc Bolan but Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and the more he studied the more the need to play electric grew within.

After a while much of his music included more electric sound but on the whole his main ballads stayed around the acoustic sound.
It was after the birth of his son Hendrik in 1992 that Joël’s love for music added another string to it’s bow when he started to study more on production, composition & arrangements by diving into the works of such greats as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - numerous classic compositions were the result of this.
Joël’s work “Wiener Quartett" received a mention at a composer-competition in Vienna. At this time he composed several classic compositions like for example “Mass for organ and soprano” He also composed classical music with elements of the rock music for film and theatres.
This was the build up to where I first came to know of Joël’s music with his 1996 orchestral demo of Marc Bolan’s rock opera ‘Children of Rarn Suite’.

We jump to 2007 where Joël Bolan started again to work more in the rock- and pop-music scene for the duet Fervencies, he composed and arranged all their songs. The music much like the Swedish pop of the 70s. This work with Fervencies didn't satisfy him. His ambition strove for more. And at least it was his son Hendrik, who brought him back to the rock-music. You can hear Hendrik on 'Promised World' as he plays the bass guitar as yet again the love for music runs in the Bolan family line.

In 2009-2010 Joël Bolan while talking to me on MSN talked of maybe leaving his French roots behind and singing more of his own songs in English. Over 2010 this became a passion to the state where he was re-recording his older songs into English form. Like many of his friends in UK I was lucky to hear this happen in the form of MP3 samples being sent to hear his growth, his change in direction.

Then new excitement came in conversation of a new song he was aiming to finish and release by 16th Sept 2010 simply called ‘Promised World’.
Right from the start Joël let his close friends follow this project as bit by bit we all heard this song in sample format (MP3) grow to it’s finished glory.
Even at the early stages we all knew this was something special. I could hear Joël’s voice change, grow as he had now been singing more English and getting a master and delivering that emotion within the lyrics.
In one part of the song he sings

‘a silver tear evoking memories
erroneous of many years
and really not to judge’

and his emotion in his vocals just gives you goosebumps.

What was strange even thou I have followed other artists songs from early demo forms many times before this song I had heard grow so much in a short time it became to me like a masterpiece, a painting where the artist was adding many layers of colours before sitting back, putting the brush down and saying “my work is done”.
I now listen to the finished work and it’s various layers of guitars build and flow together like good friends.
His electric guitar work in some parts so reminded me of Gary Moore’s classic sound even thou Joël didn’t see this but I have to say what I hear.
The 30 piece orchestra was the last thing I heard added and to hear these strings sound as if they are crying it is so beautiful. I was blown away when again on MSN Joël explained how he composes his music such as this amazing string section. He said “I sit behind my desk in my study paper & pen in front of me and I work it out, hear it in my head and just write it down” It just staggered me to think he composes this way with no use of any instruments.
The lyrics are not meant to be funny, happy joyful as it is the sad story of not only missing his father Jean-Paul but the idol that got him to where he was Marc Bolan.
The opening lines go ‘ dusk of a night in September, the frozen womb of an obscurity, in your heart wounded by the cold’ this just takes me back to ’77 and hearing that news that morning on the radio and sort of gives me a shiver.
Also within you hear maybe a sound of hope with ‘the archangel summoned your soul, open the door of a universe’ all very heavy stuff with the added question ‘why are you gone so quickly?’

‘Promised World’ is a song by a singer/songwriter/composer but more important a fan and a son to two people that were very special in his life this song is very much personal to Joël Bolan.
Saying that thou when hearing it you can find some part of it feeling personal to you too.

Promised World
(Joel Bolan)

Dusk of a night in September
The frozen womb of an obscurity
In your heart wounded by the cold
Took you towards its darkness
The archangel summoned your soul
Open the door of a universe
Named by the mortals, paradise
Promised World, paradise
Losing on the earth
A silver tear evoking memories
Erroneous of many years
And really not to judge
Why are you gone so quickly?
Will I see you in a new day?
In a cloth of light dazzling the promised world
Singing the song
The song of life

STRANGE ORCHESTRA 'Triptych (A Crown of Untold Riches) - maxi single review

Now to me there is nothing strange about ‘Strange Orchestra’ a duo consisting of Marc Hartley (Delf) on lead vocals & Gordon Abbott on guitars.
I first came across these two around a year ago and noticed they fitted into the Marc Bolan circuit as well as strawberries goes with cream. Being two big Marc Bolan fans their love and respect for him shows in all their work.

Their live sets are very popular at the Bolan Bop’s including so far 2 year’s running at The Wigan Bop (*including June 2010) and 2009 a live set at a pre-bop night in London and in Feb 2010 they joined ‘All Schools Are Strange’ at a very successful Bolantine Bop.

Strange Orchestra play a acoustic based set covering the complete catalogue of Tyrannosaurus Rex which you can experience if not done so already at this years London Bop in Sept where they appear on the same bill with ‘The Peppermint Apes’ who’ll be performing a full electric T.Rex set.

I got so use to hearing from fans that “you close your eyes it is like hearing Marc Bolan” as Delf’s vocals are so like ‘the main man’s’ it is spooky.
This makes this maxi single even more special as they are all original songs by Strange Orchestra still sounding like Tyrannosaurus Rex just so warming to any Marc Bolan fan’s soul.

Now

April 2010 they released this maxi single which has three tracks on it ‘Angel Breath’ written and composed by Gordon, ‘Queen of Beads’ written and composed by Marc (Delf) and ‘Ostara’ a joint effort.
Before I get into the tracks themselves I must say the artwork / presentation of the package is really wonderful the outer sleeve in true style of Tyrannosaurus Rex it is as if I jumped back to the late 60s as the font work matches Marc Bolan’s original style for Tyrannosaurus Rex. When I opened the sleeve notes I found a collection of very charming small lyric sheets in a very tasteful design which really finishing the package off nicely.
It sort of says before you even play the CD that a lot of care, thought and love has gone into this collection of songs.

The CD itself all proceeds from it will be donated to The Marc Bolan memorial fund which is run by OMBFC.

On to the tracks and the CD starts off with the wonderful number entitled ‘Angel Breath’
I loved playing this on my big sound system as for a duo this is bigger than you could imagine.
The sound is amazing with much added percussion all performed by Strange Orchestra with backing vocals reminding me more of Steve Peregrin Took’s Tyrannosaurus Rex years. The lyrics are touching on the mythical feel ‘ageless like earth the innocence of birth’ you listen and much like Marc Bolan’s classic’s you start to imagine/wonder who is this Angel? Is she someone we know and love, someone we loved and sadly lost or someone much older than earth from somewhere higher? ‘The world doesn’t cry and love will not die, the smell of perfume fills the room with her Angel’s Breath’
What with Delf’s vocals as ever so close to Marc Bolan’s not simply impersonating but singing with all the emotions Marc often did this track is truly a wonderful moving peace

After hearing that breath taking track and no it is not meant as a pun as it truly is the second track ‘Queen of Beads’ has that melody you feel you want to clap along to.
I could even say this could easy be a sing-a-long as the chorus ‘O my little lady, my velvet laden baby’ really pulls you to join in. So I can imagine this performed live getting everyone involved as a feel good crowd pleaser.
Saying that this has a romantic feel to the lyrics ‘you are my Queen of Beads and everything that this boy needs, and with a simple touch, you light my life so much’ to some may say almost touching on raunchy but hey! that just might be my imagination. (he grins). Vocal wise Delf’s voice sounds between late Tyrannosaurus Rex and latter T.Rex but this is not a bad thing as it helps with that amazing catchy beat this number has and if I had to find one fault in the CD it is this is too short as just feel it has more to give.

Well sadly the CD ends too soon and I find myself listening to ‘Ostara’ a more simpler music arrangement than the other tracks with lyrics that would make Mr. Bolan proud.
Lines like ‘as the moths deftly knit their fluffy silken gowns’. The song is basically about the coming of a new day as winter is passing but written in pure poetry. This track has everything that is good about Strange Orchestra in one song and makes you want to shout “we want more”.

Gordon & Delf put a lot of hard work into everything they do and I look forward to hearing more from this amazing duo.

Sequin Sings The Blues (story behind the song)

Now it seems like only yesterday like many of you I was skipping through You Tube and found an artist that stood out to me.
This has happened to many people & I never understood till I found Sequin Velvet.
I first noticed a Marc Bolan cover & played video & was hooked as the camera just loves her, the expressions and how she interpretates each song.

We soon became friends & I started helping with promotional advice, made a few videos.
Thing is one track always from that first day always stood out with me 'Jewel'.
Hearing a few various videos on You Tube of same song all with those expressions and that blues feel to the song not only in guitar style but in vocal tones stuck with me.

NOW

Not much was said about it only she once recorded an MP3 for me as a thank you of 'Jewel' which sort of came more into play much later.

See Pete Waller AKA DeafboyOne and my co-PR for him Emilia Michalska we all started this project called 'DUETS' see the idea basical was part Emilia part mine of getting new fans from various fan bases to discovery other new artists by intoducing them in a duet form.

We brought Sequin into the project at an early stage and Pete had already had a track list of his possible tracks with who so Sequin opted for 'Life's A Gas' after the first choice for her was not really her (a Bowie cover later taken by Jude Faun).
It was a real cool move as the track sounded fantastic.

Just a day after it was loaded on various website players & aired on radio (LG73 & CRMK Radio) we were saying "hey! let's do it again sometime". Little did we know that sometime be almost same week.

It was left for Sequin to pick a song title but I was buzzing so high on this first track that MP3 I mentioned earlier came into play & I just sent it to Pete saying "hey doesn't this sound blues?" and added "wouldn't it be cool recorded in blues style?".
Pete loved it said "almost Delta Blues" and we got back to Sequin saying "how about 'Jewel' for next track?"
That day she had just started a week off leave on her regular work so jumped at recording straight away this time thou not just vocals. Pete had idea of using Sequin's own timing of her own acoustic guitar. So on this track you really get that Delta Blues feel with acoustic, electric and touch of slide.
This DUETS project is really turning into something cool.

More info on the full DUETS project coming soon.

Baby Scream

Juan Pablo Mazzola AKA Baby Scream THE BOLAN COVERS

Now some may say what does Ace MegaRex know about Marc Bolan covers?
Well for the past 2 years I have been working on a CD album with one artist on Bolan covers, a download album with another & other various projects as a PR all around Marc Bolan’s music.

I first got to know the name firstly Baby Scream then later same day Juan Pablo Mazzola via a radio station CRMK Radio. I was sent these two very old recordings taken from an acetate of Marc Bolan ‘Reality’ and ‘Song for a Soldier’. The DJ at the time did not say why he sent them just to say it be a surprise later. To hear Marc Bolan and these very old Bob Dylan style recordings was a thrill as I had not heard them before. The guitar very rough almost scratchy for its age thou the vocals very clear. To say I could not wait till the 4pm radio show to find out the surprise is an understatement.
A few minutes into show the DJ tells us he has Baby Scream with him as a guest & for most part of the show in sections was his interview & music from Juan Pablo Mazzola AKA Baby Scream.
He left us waiting a bit till he played these two Bolan covers which really got my attention after all not long ago I just heard the originals for first time.
See many artists take on the classics and they all have various reasons for doing so but to take an unknown selection from an artist who has a massive back catalogue of known classics was really interesting to me especially hearing from Juan why.
When I heard ‘Reality’ and that acoustic guitar sounding so clear it made me wish more artists take on Marc’s unknown or unfinished songs. The arrangement all be it a simply one worked so well with Juan’s vocals and hearing him talk of his respect for Marc on the radio you could just tell this within the song to be true.
After hearing other tracks from Baby Scream from his two earlier EPs ‘Ups and Downs’ and ‘Identity Theft’ I could tell Juan had put some of himself into this track. There is still talk of adding maybe strings to the song but I feel even thou that will work and be fantastic it is the perfectionist within Juan coming out which I see in many good artists.
As for ‘A Song for a soldier’ how different can a song be? Again original by Marc guitar very scratchy & vocals even more in style of Dylan but the words very 60s anti Vietnam sounded very much the movement of the time it was recorded unlike many other Bolan that seem to never age. Then comes Baby Scream and to hear the intro of drums almost like a march then in comes electric guitars that have an almost late punk feel to them which is very fitting as Marc was known as Godfather of punk it gave a whole totally amazing new feel it really rocks.
What really got me too was the guitar rift at the end of the track starts off subtle then into a roar really reminded me of the classic Bolan was known for & to fade out with this guitar fits so well. It showed that Baby Scream is not an artist who just plays acoustic numbers he ROCKS too and since hearing this one track I have heard many such class numbers by him.
I personally feel the way Juan has recorded this track he has really brought it into our decade and given a today feel to it.
Both these songs affected me so much I had to write to Juan & since we have spoken much of his future ideas & direction in music.
Also these past weeks I introduced Baby Scream to an artist I work with DeafboyOne to record a duet ‘Working Class Hero’ which has amazing sound and through those two Bolan covers and a radio show I have met a real talented new friend.

Please enjoy everything that is Baby Scream - Ace MegaRex

FEELING T.REXLESS

All through 2009 Peter Waller AKA DeafboyOne had been recording covers of the late great Marc Bolan.
They had been getting air play on radio stations such as CRMK Radio 'The Groove Lounge' http://www.thegroover.net and also on The Ramoana Experience on LG73 http://lg73.ca
By the end of 2009 we knew we almost had an album full of tracks so my design started to what became 'Feeling T.Rexless'.

It never went any further till we started on a EP project named THE DUETS which the idea just came to me one day & after talking to my co-PR for DeafboyOne Emilia Michalska AKA EMI VENOM PRODUCTIONS a list of artists was drawn & presented to Pete.

On that list Pete put set tracks he wanted or felt he like to record with that artist and next to Sequin Velvet he put 'Life's A Gas'.
Much the same way as 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' was put together (mentioned in other blog) in no time we had a fantastic mix & not only did we have our first 'Duets' track in the can we completed track list for 'Feeling T.Rexless'.
I think Emi has a wonderful knack of selecting songs / running order for albums so I sent her full list which she came back with
01. 20th Century Boy
02. Cosmic Dancer
03. Girl
04. Metal Guru
05. Spaceball Richochet
06. Planet Queen
07. Children Of The Revolution
08. Mystic Lady
09. Get It On
10. She Was Born To Be My Unicorn
11. Mambo Sun
12. Deborah
13. Telegram Sam
14. Life's A Gas (Feat. Sequin Velvet)
15. The Groover
16. Hot Love

and now album is complete and soon be available on FREE download including covers if you like that type of thing.

Since I burnt the first copy of the album on CD-R I have been playing it non-stop as it rocks from start to finished.
