GOODBYE STARMAN

 

As a child I grew up in a house full of music, my mother loved her LP collection and played them loud every weekend and my older sister had started her 7” collection which educated me in the sounds of the 70s.

 

It was this time I first heard the name David Bowie and saw his outragious posters and appearences on Top of the Pops. Since then David Bowie and his music has been in my life and in many ways closer than others. I remember the release of the ‘Let’s Dance’ album when I was working in a record store, David had come back all reinvented AGAIN and took over the charts and our store was mobbed with fans and merchandise. In fact I had to go with store owners to Brighton record fair to bid for more stock as that was the need for his music.

 

Later in my life David Bowie came back into it in a bigger way and I got closer than I could ever imagined to his music. It was discovering LG73 and who what must be said ‘the number one David Bowie fan’ Ramoana Stone. Her show ‘The Ramoana Experience’ was and still is all things Bowie with live concerts, interviews, interesting facts, fun and rare recordings. It was through Ramoana’s show that I had a go at presenting radio due to her kindness to give up one part of her air time. We had Bolan and Bowie together in the same show and even on David Bowie’s 65th birthday we did a massive birthday party with fans writing in messages and poems to the legend that was Bowie. It was through this radio show I met who is now my wife so thank you RaM and thank you David.

I also worked on a Bowie project with Pete Waller under his DeafboyOne banner in 2009 entitled 'Ground Control To DeafboyOne' in which I helped on it's design of the cover and recording of an album of David Bowie covers which are still close to our hearts as the album was made with love and respect.

 

 

 

Following this I also worked with EMI Venom on promoting that album in which an amazing video is still available to view on You Tube of 'Space Oddity'

 

I have also been lucky to meet another DJ, singer and all over one rocking entertainer and good friend Lady Starduzt name taken from a track of Mister Bowie’s. I produced only a few of her radio shows but got a friend for life

 

 

 

Waking up this morning and seeing his face on every post on Facebook was news I know we all dreaded to ever happen as David Bowie we fooled ourselves would always be here. He maybe gone but his music his various reinventions Ziggy & Alandin Sane as well as his ‘Heroes’, Tin Machine and many others will live on with us forever. I am just sad that future generations will only know this great singer, songwriter and entertainer in past tence.

Lost Balloons by Baby Scream THE REVIEW

I have now lost count at how many reviews I have written on Baby Scream but each time it is always a pleasure.

Today's release is a FREE download on Eternal Sunday records entitled 'Lost Balloons'.

It reminds me of a bag of sweets children use to buy in UK from 1950s up to late
1960s called 'Jamboree Bag' as you buy it but not know what mix you get inside til you opened it or in this case press PLAY.

This album has such a wild mixed range Barry Parsons (CRMK Radio) told me "isn't it so awesome?"

The album kicks off with a short, quiet and relaxing acoustic 'We Are Against The System (One More Chance) which is a demo and sort of threw me really as with a title like that I expected a completely different sound.

As for track two 'Ball Of Fun' well you could be listening to any big name rock band as so heavy, in fact the most nearest to heavy metal I've heard Baby Scream. Talk about clearing the wax from your ears after track one

As the album moves on with 'I've Had Enough With You' we find we move more into a punk sound the sound sort of suits Juan Pablo Mazzola's vocals with really rough & agressive growl which is a far cry from his past Lennon influenced tones so many mention (including me).

This album has rock, punk, demo's and acoustic's but also it has a large number of cover versions.
The first cover on 'Lost Balloons' is a track first recorded by The Electric Prunes entitled 'Onie'. This is a wonderful acoustic & Juan's vocals are so soft & layered well to give a great pure sound with amazing backing by the band including a lovely piano solo.

'Revenge Of The Nerds' is a track you hear & swear you've heard before amazing guitar work & the drum beat gives an epic movie soundtrack feel to the song. Juan's vocals are rather haunting almost ghostly.

Don't be fooled by the start of the demo 'I Don't Wanna Wake Up From This Dream' as this rocks too or should I say R O C K S
I have played this track more than any other on the album.

'Barry's Blues' (The Groove Lounge) was recorded mainly as a radio jingle for Barry Parsons Wednesday's show on CRMK Radio. A Marc Bolan themed show Juan has appeared on a few times and I may add where I first met Juan. This track uses a Bolan style rift to give you the feel of what Barry's show gives you every week.

Now this track really confused me as it was the very first track I heard off 'Lost Balloons' sent by Juan. He said this is what my new album will be like, I played Tony Orlando's cover 'Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Old Oak Tree' and think huh!!!
My confusion soon passed when the cover was better than I expected as I had many doubts as the original was so cheasey & I was told by Juan that "trust me you love the album" he wasn't wrong.

'Sadly Beautiful' is a home acoustic cover of The Replacements which is so clear & again relaxes you to sink into a comfortable sofa & start to drift off to a world till BANG!!!! this loud rocking, punky fast, loud beat of 'When The Angel's Sing' a cover of Social Distortion shakes you to the foundations.

Don't think you can sit back down to relax again after that thou as what you think happens if I say it is followed by a two in a row of the Ramones covers 'Judy Is A Punk Rocker' and Beat The Brat' ?

CORRECT it sooooo rocks soooooooo punks up and I assure you there is full & total respect to the legends that were The Ramones so awesome.

The next two tracks are very personal to me as I first met Juan due to the original demo's on an acetate of Marc Bolan of these songs 'Song For A Soldier' and
'Reality'. The tracks were never released by Marc in his life time & sadly still have not been today as they are owned by a private collector. However Juan's take on these demo's are so fantastic there was much talk and interest & wait for them to become available. High Wire is another Marc Bolan cover (T.Rex) it is a wonderful acoustic ballad and I just love the vocals as Juan always shows his passion to Marc's work. Hard to believe this is only a demo.

The last two tracks of the album I was personally involved in as at the time I was working with DeafboyOne on a project entitled 'DUETS'. Pete Waller (DeafboyOne) who was (at time of recording) living in Sydney, Australia & I was finding artists around the globe to sing with him through the magic of Internet and Pete's master on the mixer friend/producer Rod Willner.

'Cosmic Dancer' was the 2nd take as Pete had recorded this on his own but Juan had requested to duet him on this track also. The sound of it being live was just so clever as really they were thousands of miles apart. I love too how adding bongoes gave it the old sound of Tyrannosaurus Rex which Marc's original of this classic he had moved away from.

As for 'Working Class Hero' it just had to be done as Juan is such a big fan of Lennon's & his vocals are always compared to his.
The duets introduced themselves to each other and are now good friends wanting at some point to meet up for real & record again.

That will be worth waiting for...

Sequin Sings The Blues (story behind the song)

Now it seems like only yesterday like many of you I was skipping through You Tube and found an artist that stood out to me.
This has happened to many people & I never understood till I found Sequin Velvet.
I first noticed a Marc Bolan cover & played video & was hooked as the camera just loves her, the expressions and how she interpretates each song.

We soon became friends & I started helping with promotional advice, made a few videos.
Thing is one track always from that first day always stood out with me 'Jewel'.
Hearing a few various videos on You Tube of same song all with those expressions and that blues feel to the song not only in guitar style but in vocal tones stuck with me.

NOW

Not much was said about it only she once recorded an MP3 for me as a thank you of 'Jewel' which sort of came more into play much later.

See Pete Waller AKA DeafboyOne and my co-PR for him Emilia Michalska we all started this project called 'DUETS' see the idea basical was part Emilia part mine of getting new fans from various fan bases to discovery other new artists by intoducing them in a duet form.

We brought Sequin into the project at an early stage and Pete had already had a track list of his possible tracks with who so Sequin opted for 'Life's A Gas' after the first choice for her was not really her (a Bowie cover later taken by Jude Faun).
It was a real cool move as the track sounded fantastic.

Just a day after it was loaded on various website players & aired on radio (LG73 & CRMK Radio) we were saying "hey! let's do it again sometime". Little did we know that sometime be almost same week.

It was left for Sequin to pick a song title but I was buzzing so high on this first track that MP3 I mentioned earlier came into play & I just sent it to Pete saying "hey doesn't this sound blues?" and added "wouldn't it be cool recorded in blues style?".
Pete loved it said "almost Delta Blues" and we got back to Sequin saying "how about 'Jewel' for next track?"
That day she had just started a week off leave on her regular work so jumped at recording straight away this time thou not just vocals. Pete had idea of using Sequin's own timing of her own acoustic guitar. So on this track you really get that Delta Blues feel with acoustic, electric and touch of slide.
This DUETS project is really turning into something cool.

In the early hours of Saturday 28 June 1980, Gary Critchley, a young punk rocker who had only been in London for ten days of a two week stay, was found lying seriously injured on a pavement below his squat. He had a broken back, ankle and wrist, and was subsequently found to have suffered brain damage from a hammer blow to the front of his skull. Drug traces in his blood showed he had taken large quantities of sleeping pills as well as alcohol.
When the hospital called police to investigate the circumstances of Gary’s injuries, they found Mr McNeill dead in the squat above and the room covered in blood – most of it that of McNeill, who had been hit with a hammer 27 times, but some of it was Gary’s. Inside the flat a bloodstained hammer was found, but with no prints or any other links to Gary. Gary’s blood was also found on a car “crook lock.” Bloodstained clothing near the body included jeans which had traces of both men’s blood and a T-shirt with Gary’s blood only. Despite the fact that McNeill’s blood had been spattered all over the room, not one speck of his blood was found on Gary’s clothing
As for the hammer blow to Gary’s own head, the prosecution claimed he must have struck himself as he launched his frenzied attack on McNeill. For that to be correct, however, Gary’s injury, which caused him serious frontal lobe damage, would have been caused by the claw end of the hammer – but his injury was the same as McNeill’s, consistent with the round end of the hammer.
Prosecutors had relied on the fact that Critchley had told police he did not remember going home with McNeill, but then in a letter to friends written during his three months in hospital, he said he had taken him home and got drunk, and remembered opening the door and being struck. They said that Gary’s claims of amnesia were bogus.
The only forensic evidence linking Gary to the attack was an undone training shoe – two to three sizes too small for him – which Gary was found to be wearing on his left foot, after having fallen from the fourth storey window. On his other foot was one of his own laced-up boots which witnesses said he had been wearing that day. Footprints “exactly similar” to the print on the sole of the trainer were found in the flat, which the prosecutor argued showed Critchley was in the room after McNeill was attacked and probably killed.
But if Gary was wearing one boot and one trainer as alleged, why was there no blood on the sole of the boot and no boot print in the flat? What happened to his other boot? It was not found in the flat. The prosecution’s argument was that punks wore odd clothes like that – even if it was far too small for his foot...

FEELING T.REXLESS

All through 2009 Peter Waller AKA DeafboyOne had been recording covers of the late great Marc Bolan.
They had been getting air play on radio stations such as CRMK Radio 'The Groove Lounge' http://www.thegroover.net and also on The Ramoana Experience on LG73 http://lg73.ca
By the end of 2009 we knew we almost had an album full of tracks so my design started to what became 'Feeling T.Rexless'.

It never went any further till we started on a EP project named THE DUETS which the idea just came to me one day & after talking to my co-PR for DeafboyOne Emilia Michalska AKA EMI VENOM PRODUCTIONS a list of artists was drawn & presented to Pete.

On that list Pete put set tracks he wanted or felt he like to record with that artist and next to Sequin Velvet he put 'Life's A Gas'.
Much the same way as 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' was put together (mentioned in other blog) in no time we had a fantastic mix & not only did we have our first 'Duets' track in the can we completed track list for 'Feeling T.Rexless'.
I think Emi has a wonderful knack of selecting songs / running order for albums so I sent her full list which she came back with

Don't Cry For Me Argentina (story behind the mix)

On 16th June I was sent in early hours a final mix of a classic song just been revamped.
'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' from the musical 'Evita'.

This has been cranked up a notch with a rock guitar rift but still tells the story with passion.
It features Pete Waller AKA DeafboyOne and Bre Kilpin AKA Breeze.

Now the story behind the song -
No not talking real story about Eva Peron we all know that already & if you don't watch the film with ole Mads in.
This is story behind this mix
Well a few months ago a friend of mine a Graham Collins who helps me with merchandise on my artists he was listening to DeafboyOne and said "I bet you he could do a wicked Ian Dury with 'What a waste' tell him". So I did 2 week later I played Graham this MP3 & he was right it was so cool had that cockney charm to it.
On leaving Graham turned to me & said "oh! for a laugh tell Pete I bet him he won't do a cover of 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' that will stump him".
Well I offered Pete this as a dare & Pete responded with "you know I can see something in that what will work".
Soon as I knew Pete was up for it I said "what if we brought Bre in?", see at time Bre was already getting known to Pete as she was teaming up for another duet for a featured DUETS EP out later in year. I first thought of only opening the track with her EVITA style cry of the song title.
Well Pete thought it was a great idea & I should ask Bre & within a few days Bre had recorded a few versions of title line & emailed them to Pete.
After a search for news reels for very start & hearing Bre we both decided it be so fantastic to give Bre more of the song.
So I emailed again & Bre recorded what you now hear on the finished mix.
The end was finished with a whisper & WOW!! GOOSEBUMPS

What amazes me is Pete is in Sydney Australia, I am in Worthing West Sussex UK and Bre is up in Linc UK and everything gets sent to that master of engineers Rod Willner also in Sydney as Pete says "the world is getting smaller"
